Original plein air painting | 6×8” | oil on panel
Eastern Sierra, California
This was painted at the trailhead to Taboose Pass, which is one of the notorious “Four Bad Passes” of the Eastern Sierra - and my favorite pass. They are such named because of their lengthy desert beginnings, unmaintained trails and steep ascents. Taboose Pass is the only of these four tough passes I’ve tried. Every time I climb it my ego is shredded, and I am left with a purer version of a self who is in blissful awe. To be in the presence of those glorious sherbet crags is an incredible gift.
My son accompanied me on this trek. He’s hiked up waterfall trails in Yosemite, but those could never have prepared him for the heat, insects and snow traverses of this pass. We didn’t make it to the top on this trip, but our time together was the important part.
