Original plein air painting | 12×9” | oil on panel
Cow Creek, California
I have a healthy obsession with sugar pines, and this was my first attempt at painting one. The idea for this painting marinated in my mind for years until I was sure my skill matched the image and feeling in my imagination. It was quite a windy morning and periodically I could hear things fall from the trees. At one point I heard the almost unmistakable sound of claws scraping down a tree truck in the distance. I never saw the bear, but I love to think it was out there with me.
Unframed | Continental US shipping included
Sugar Pine’s branches sway above firs in a grand wind-dance, dangling her cones like priceless jewels. A fantasy of this image has been pulsing through me for years, and now I’m living it through my brush. It’s like hearing Debussy after only the memory of music. I absorb bliss from a hundred feet below and set myself aside to allow the painting to emerge.
