California cudweed often grows in forest areas that have been cleared or otherwise disturbed. At the end of summer the flowers dry but don’t shrivel, like accents in a floral arrangement. They smell wonderfully like maple syrup. The cold day I painted this clearing of them, I was warmed by the happy childhood memory of maple syrup over french toast.
