Sword Lake, Emigrant Wilderness, California
Sword Lake is a popular hiking and swimming-hole destination, and for good reason! It’s a serene little lake that’s an easy few-mile hike from the trailhead. It was so hot the morning I hiked out there that I took a dip before settling down to paint. I was the only human present that day, and was kept company the local kingfisher. Later I learned that so many people have enjoyed jumping off the large rock!
